Valentina Zlatarova Workshop

Our two-week workshops enable ceramic artists to focus and immerse: furthering their knowledge of a specific aspect of clay, while rejuvenating their creativity amid the energy of fellow artists and the inspiration of a cultural setting renowned for its exquisite artwork and culture.

SOMATIC GESTURE:
Exploring the Torso in Clay

with Valentina Zlatarova
March 17-30, 2024

Returning to Gaya CAC a second time to lead this all-levels workshop, Valentina Zlatarova offers an in-depth study of the human torso through the lens of classical-contemporary sculpture. Starting with a clear introduction to artist’s anatomy, we will gain insight into the construction and composition of figurative sculpture, learn how to make meaningful observations that train the eye for accuracy, and hone these skills to determine proportion and placement.

Citing both historical precedent and current practices, discussions and demonstrations will elucidate what drawing and light mean in sculptural terms, and how the environment influences sculptures and vice versa. Delving deeper, we will explore how pose, gesture, tactility, and emphasis can convey narrative, meaning, and pathos.

Torsos will be built solid on an armature based on photographs, increasing detail incrementally. Upon completion they will be hollowed out and reassembled in final preparation for a single firing. The fundamental goal is to balance technique with creativity: for each torso to be an authentic exploration of human anatomy, composition and self expression.

TUITION: USD $2200 inclusive of all studio materials, glazes and firings, catered lunches, welcome dinner, and excursions around the island. We will assist in making recommendations for bookings for nearby hotels, bungalows or home-stays in convenient proximity to Gaya studio (accommodation is not included in tuition).

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE - SOMATIC GESTURE: exploring the torso in clay

The focus of this workshop is for participants to learn how to construct a believable representation of the human form based on photographs and achieve independence in learning the steps to create a sculpture from concept to clay.  With an introduction to anatomy and examples through art history Valentina will teach you how to make confident marks and decisions when it comes to your own work and will help train your eye accuracy by bringing your attention to things such as transitions, composition and surface marking.
