Hand-built / Heartfelt: Creating Our Personal Saints in Clay
with Kelly Garrett Rathbone

May 3-16, 2020

During the course of this 2-week workshop, students will construct large head and incorporate imagery and details to create their own personal saints. A personal saint can be anything that is meaningful, curious, or inspirational to you. The lush tropical paradise of Bali, is also the land of ritual and mystical culture making it a perfect setting to soak up inspiration to use for this project. Hand-building at large scale will give participants time and space to focus on the anatomy, nuances and movement of facial features, animating the face through subtle gestures. Tricks for achieving symmetry and mapping out composition will be covered as well as surface imagery through carving, drawing and ways of achieving texture and smooth surfaces.

This will be a combination of slab and coil construction, hollowing out when and where it’s needed. Glazes and surface treatments will be discussed. Finished sculptures will be bisque-fired after workshop. The workshop will also cover: how to repair broken greenware (unfired work), a method of repairing chipped or broken finished work, and Kelly’s process for developing new glaze combinations to create unique surfaces with depth and texture.

Kelly will make time to demo hands, will present a slide-talk to share her work and offer insight into her thought process, sources of inspiration, and the technicalities of different sculptures. 1-2 days of relevant excursions into the cultural wealth and natural beauty of Bali will be included. Students of all levels of experience are invited to join this challenging and culturally inspired workshop, which is designed to advance each student’s technical skills and expand their artistry.

Open to all levels of experience.
