Stories Our Hands Tell: narrative sculpture
with Fleur Schell
June 28 - July 11, 2020
“The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” ― W.B. Yeats
This two week creative workshop with Australian Ceramic Illustrator, Fleur Schell, will emphasise the importance of focusing on the details of the parts to achieve a far more elaborate and meaningful whole.
Starting with an inspirational thought, quote or saying, Fleur will show you how she transforms words into a poignant 3-dimensional diorama. Fleur will workshop many clay building processes central to her practice, showing how she honours the essence of objects while playing with conventions and expectations. Participants will be encouraged to explore the relationship between built clay objects, historical objects and found materials through a creative treasure hunt. On her last visit to Gaya, Fleur was deeply moved by a visit to Setia Darma, House of Masks and Puppets, and the way Balinese spiritual and cultural beliefs are retained through dramatic stories told using highly elaborate puppets. This workshop will explore this connection between two dimensional and three dimensional worlds as a pathway to creating a rich and fantastical setting for each participants final work.
Open to all levels of experience.
