BIOMORPHICS: Natural Forms in Clay
with Carol Gouthro & CJ Jilek
August 4-17, 2019
The verdant tropical landscape of Bali could not offer a better backdrop for masterful ceramic artists, Carol Gouthro and Cj Jilek, in their unique biomorphic ceramic sculptures. The animated forms and signature surfaces for which both are renowned will literally come alive in this ultimately inspiring setting for their two-week workshop. Utilizing techniques ranging from hand-building with wooden drape molds, slab building with tar paper, creating texture slabs and bas-relief clay molds, participants will investigate methods and develop concepts for building a personal visual vocabulary and explore a layered approach to the ceramic surface that evolves from wet clay through bone dry to bisque. Surface practices will include the use of color, pattern making, wax resist, stenciling, and sgraffito. Carol and Cj will also reveal a behind the scenes look at the engineering necessary to produce elaborate sculptural forms, and the intense studio time will be complemented by pertinent forays into the lush island landscape. Join in for an exuberant, fecund botanical adventure in clay!
